Into the Woods: Milky White’s Strawberry Shake
12 Sep
It’s time once again to head out of the kitchen and into the woods! This is the fourth post in our series on “Into the Woods”, Stephen Sondheim’s wonderful Broadway musical. Are you confused? New to theveganbutcher.com? Behind on the times? Living under a rock? Fret not! You can catch up here, here, and here.
In “Into the Woods”, Jack (of the classic tale Jack and the Beanstalk) lives with his mother in a tumbledown home with no money and only an old cow to their name. Said cow, Milky White, is Jack’s only friend, but she must be sold to bring some much needed gold into the household. Milky White hadn’t given milk for a while before they decide to sell her, which sets up this recipe perfectly:
Milky White’s Milk-Free Strawberry Milkshake
- 2 bananas, frozen
- 2 cups strawberries, frozen
- 1 ½ cups vanilla soy milk
- 1 cup vanilla vegan ice cream
Peel bananas and put them in a blender.
Add strawberries and soy milk and blend. I started with 1 cup of milk and added the other half of a cup as I blended, but do whatever works for you.
Add ice cream and blend. I used So Delicious Organic Creamy Vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmmm!
And you’re done in two blinks of a calf’s eye! The recipe above made enough to fill three of these big glasses. Garnish with a fresh strawberry if you’re feeling fancy.
This was quick and easy and perfect for a hot summer evening. And with no harm done to her, Milky White encourages you to make as many as you’d like!

This sounds so simple to make, yet so yummy!
Garnish with a strawberry. OR FIFTEEN! Because that’s the way we do it in the… in the– the… Yeah. That place!
