I Miss Having a Kitchen

11 Oct

Love You Brunches

Since arriving in London I have had one of three things for breakfast everyday: 1) Cold granola with cold soy milk, 2) A cold Clif Bar, 3) Nothing. Our apartment hotel has a kitchenette but it’s tiny and I’m scared of the appliances*. When flipping through my archive of unblogged-about pictures, I came around to these pictures from the Friday morning before I left Canada and wanted to rewind to it SO BADLY. I miss hot breakfast and I want to eat this again. Now! This brunch was facking amazing.

Beware the Ides of March!

Home Slice

March 15: The Ides of March, or THE BEST DAY OF THE YEAR! Why? Because it’s my birthday! (And since I’m the birthday girl, I’m going to make you listen to my favourite song of all time.) Time to get our cake on.

Strawberries were always my favourite when I was growing up because my red hair was described to me by my Mama as “strawberry blonde”. I figured if it was good enough for my hair, it was good enough for me. (What? Just roll with it.) Strawberries were my thang. This year for my b’day I made strawberry chocolate cake. (more…)

Awwww…..NUTS!

Welcome to the Remembrance Day edition of The Vegan Butcher! Let me start by saying how big a part of my life the armed forces are. I have friends in all branches of the military, in countries all over the world. My father currently serves in the Canadian Air Force and has for nearly 30 years. I am a military brat through and through and my life is richer for it. I hope you all remembered our past today and support our present everyday! Lest we forget. (more…)

Do You Want S’more?!?

S'Love

In my city (HALIWOOD!…but seriously, it’s Halifax, NS) you cannot buy vegan graham crackers. I baked some for my Guy Fawkes s’more party on Friday and had leftovers. That means one thing: S’more Cupcakes!

This recipe is, of course, from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World (I told you I bake from it a lot). The recipe was not outrageous to follow, you just need to have access to the VGC. (Vegan graham crackers?! Try to keep up, please.) The fun with this recipe comes from the mess you make decorating them. Check it, yo. (more…)

Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

S'marvelous

It’s Guy Fawkes Night! Commonly known as Bonfire Night, the 5th of November is an annual celebration marking the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. As a holder of dual citizenship with Britain, I am allowed to observe this tradition in Canada by making s’mores. God Save the Queen!

Totally Mint

ChocoMint

Let me start this post by saying that I come from a small town where the word “mint” is (was? Are you kids still doing it nowadays?) used as a descriptive term for an attractive person. Equivalent to hot or fit or goooood-lookin’. (i.e. “Guuuurl, have you seen Steve today? So mint!” or “I am going to pick him up this weekend, he is MINT.” You get the idea.) Now onwards and forwards…

I am a lifelong member of the Girl Guides of Canada. I started as a Spark at the age of 5, worked my way up through the ranks, and finally ended as a leader. I’m taking this year off, as leading a unit whilst working two jobs is a level of insanity that I am not willing to ascend to. A big part of my childhood was spent selling Girl Guide cookies. During our fall campaign we peddled chocolate mint cookies, and people went (and still go) absolutely ape shit for them. GG cookies aren’t vegan (how wonderful would it be if they were?!), so now I need to find another way to get my chocolaty-mint fix.

Spaghetti & Beanballs

Spaghetti & Beanballs

First and foremost, HAPPY WORLD VEGAN DAY! I celebrated by blatantly breaking my office’s business dress code and wearing an SSOV hoodie proudly around my workplace all day.

I decided that since today is a worldly day, I needed to cook something from a different country for dinner. Wait, nix that. Let’s be truthful with one another here. I was just craving spaghetti and meatballs and had been for a couple of weeks.

SIDE NOTE: I am vegan. I eat no meat, dairy, eggs, or other animal bi-products. I will use words like “meat”, “chicken”, “cheese”, “milk” etc. while talking about my food. Understand and deal with the fact that I am talking about vegan substitutions. Obvi. I get sick of using quotation marks all over the place. “OKAY?!?!”
