I’ve Gotta Stop Going to Vx

22 Nov

TLT

As I announced on Twitter and Facebook a couple of weeks ago, I now work at the only fully vegan bakery in all of big, bad London, Ms Cupcake! About once a week I’ll get sent to deliver a special order of cakes and treats to Vx, the fully vegan shop near King’s Cross.

“What?!” you’re probably thinking. “Getting paid to visit a vegan shop?!?” Trust me, it’s nothing but trouble. Every time I go there I find something new to buy and I’m spending far too much money. Though, I’m sure the owner is not complaining. (more…)

Tofu, How I Have Missed You!

23 Oct

Piping

I finally found tofu in this new city of mine! The Tescos and Marks & Spencers that I have been haunting these past three weeks have left me high and dry in the soy curd department. This afternoon was a perfect, sunny, crisp October day to walk around and finally find a Sainsbury’s. I took a roughly 5km roundtrip jaunt to the supermarket located over in East Ham. The way there was lovely. I was walking through a part of town I hadn’t seen yet, taking in local shops and wandering town their High Street, marvelling at the new and exciting.

The way back was AWFUL. My arms nearly fell off my body. I always buy too much stuff. Between the supermarket and the street-side vegetable market stalls, I got some wicked (albeit far too many) ingredients for a stir-fry. (more…)

Use Your Noodle

15 Oct

TOFU

The other day we were in the West End (after seeing Phantom of the Opera for the second time–so good!) and we dropped in to Wagamama for some delightful Pan-Asian cuisine. If you love noodles, you will love this chain of restaurants! (more…)

I Miss Having a Kitchen

11 Oct

Love You Brunches

Since arriving in London I have had one of three things for breakfast everyday: 1) Cold granola with cold soy milk, 2) A cold Clif Bar, 3) Nothing. Our apartment hotel has a kitchenette but it’s tiny and I’m scared of the appliances*. When flipping through my archive of unblogged-about pictures, I came around to these pictures from the Friday morning before I left Canada and wanted to rewind to it SO BADLY. I miss hot breakfast and I want to eat this again. Now! This brunch was facking amazing.

The Bitch–No…The Butch is Back!

Sanwizard

I’m back, melonfarmers! I was away from the kitchen and the internet pretty hardcore for about three weeks as I finished rehearsals and then began performances for the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. Yeah, that’s right. I’m IN it. Hear the highest, highest, high notes that the 1st Sopranos in the adult choir sing? Hear that one person squawking them out? That’s right! This fackin’ guy.

So now that I am no longer living at the Metro Centre I have returned to the kitchen. And man oh man, how I have missed it. (more…)

Fresh Food But Not Food From Fresh

3 Jun

Hell Yes

My last post was about the meals we ate at the restaurant Fresh while I was on vacation in Toronto. This post is about all the other meals from that vacation, both in Toronto and back in my brother’s city of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. (more…)

So Fresh and So Clean

31 May

Ring Ring

Welcome to your May post of The Vegan Slacker! You know what? I’m not even going to apologise for not posting more often. In 4 months I will not be working two jobs anymore (hopefully) and I will be posting so much you will long for the good old days when I left you alone and didn’t harass your RSS feed or however you good folks find me. We’re almost out of the woods, friends. Then we’ll get some content up on this sizzite!

Exactly one month ago (Jeez Louise, I am slack, aren’t I?)* I was in Toronto at the Skydome watching the Blue Jays play the greatest baseball team in the history of the world (hereafter referred to as “The Yankees”). I flew to YYZ to see my brother and his wife one last time before my big move to the UK and while I was there we took in some good baseball and even better vegan food. This post chronicles my multiple visits to my favourite restaurant in the T-Dot: Fresh. (more…)

Vampires Need Not Apply

4 Apr

Ring Ring Ring

This meal contained enough garlic and onions to keep even that creepy, boundary-overstepping pedophile Edward Cullen at bay. Twihards, calm down. I too am a fan (read my “About Me” page if you doubt me) of the vampire-preys-on-young-girl-themed Twilight series, but you’ve got to admit that’s a good intro for this garlic mayo and onion ring spread.

While we had the deep fryer fired up for vegan Fish & Chips, I decided to break in my shiny new book Vegan Diner by Julie Hasson. I bought it just last week and, like Bella, am already deeply and madly in love (although I have only known it for a unrealistically short amount of time). Seriously, this book has anything you could want from a vegan greasy spoon: burgers, malt shakes, doughnuts, salads and slaws, sandwiches, roasts, and desserts. Oh, the desserts! Yes, even having only cooked from it once, this is a definitely a book I recommend you check out, dear readers. (more…)

Rice Roll-Ups!

12 Mar

Chopstick it to the Man

Let me start this post by saying that the word “roll” has lost all meaning to me. It looks all wrong and I can’t even tell if I’m spelling it correctly anymore. Have you ever done that with a word? Looked at it too much and it suddenly becomes meaningless? It happens a lot to me, but never with “roll” before. It’s usually “lunch” or “basketball”. But seriously, say the word “lunch” over and over and over. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!?! Okay, “roll” has come back to me, so let’s roll out.

Last night my darling omnivore, Jerri (or as I fondly refer to her, Jerr Bear, Baby Girl, or even more cleverly, BG), and I made dinner from scratch. I was flying by the seat of my pants. Spices and vegetables were soaring hither thither around the room and my Baby Girl, bless her, was along for the whole ride. A dedicated co-pilot of the kitchen, she was. This is how it all came about. (more…)

Breakfast for Supper

9 Feb

Michael Bubleberry Pancakes

Round two of recipe testing for Alicia C. Simpson’s next book involves all things breakfast…….for supper! I love breakfast for supper. I don’t have time to ever cook breakfast for breakfast anymore, so supper time’s pretty much my only option anyway. But we’ll pretend it’s by choice, okay? Okay. (more…)
