I Put A Spell On You

31 Oct

Good God, I Wanna Kiss Myself

It’s Hallowe’en, I have just carved my pumpkin, and my original, childhood VHS copy of “Hocus Pocus” is playing in the VCR. What could possibly make this day more wonderful? If you’re thinking “baking with squash from the fall harvest”, you and I would be on the same page. (more…)

Garnished to Shit

A few weeks ago I did a guest post on the food blog of a friend of my Winnipegger cousin. I am posting it on my site as well, because this has become my reference guide for my own recipes. If I don’t post it here I will undoubtedly lose track of it and then where will I be? Recipeless and sad. Are you ready? This is how I would have posted this post. Let’s get on it.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

My name is Tracy Butcher and I am vegan. On my website, my Twitter feed and my Facebook page I go by the moniker The Vegan Butcher, but you, my friends, can call me The Vegan. Welcome to my guest post on Mizz Laura’s Comfort Food blog! (more…)

Beware the Ides of March!

16 Mar

Home Slice

March 15: The Ides of March, or THE BEST DAY OF THE YEAR! Why? Because it’s my birthday! (And since I’m the birthday girl, I’m going to make you listen to my favourite song of all time.) Time to get our cake on.

Strawberries were always my favourite when I was growing up because my red hair was described to me by my Mama as “strawberry blonde”. I figured if it was good enough for my hair, it was good enough for me. (What? Just roll with it.) Strawberries were my thang. This year for my b’day I made strawberry chocolate cake. (more…)

BOMB

What a great day! I slept in for the first time in months, I went to the Top of the Rock (I was probably the highest vegan in the city at that moment–unless there was one at the top of the Empire State Building…or smoking something good in Brooklyn), I got h-core hit on by aspiring hip hop artists in Times Square, went to the Lego Store, and explored St. Patrick’s Cathedral (and got told off by security, but what else is new?). I went to the movies and a huge comic book store, and sprinkled throughout was a helluva lot of great vegan food! Let’s recap. (more…)

It’s a Cakewalk!

Layers

Remember Cakewalks? I sure do! At my elementary school in Cape Breton we used to have them all the time as fundraisers. Now you’ll have to forgive me, because it was a while ago and my memories of how they were exactly run are a bit hazy (because at that age, who cares about details? CAKE!!!! Actually, my mind still works along the same lines when cake is involved). From what I remember, people would bring in cakes and kids would pay to play. Music would play, you’d walk around in a circle, stepping on numbered pieces of paper. The music would stop, a number would be drawn, and if the drawn number matched up with the square you landed on, you got to choose a cake! WOOOO! So delightful!

Over the years “Cakewalk” has become a term meaning easy or effortless. Let me tell you, friends, making this cake was no cakewalk. (more…)

Frogs Eyes

Y’all ready for this?!? It’s time for my first posted recipe! These are my favourite cookies of all time and have been since childhood. They have, of course, been altered and veganised, but they still tastes just as good! These bring back a lot of memories… (more…)

Yellow Rose of Texas

…guess I’ll go eat worms! This post is purely for the kids, or anyone else you enjoy tricking and feeding sugar to.

When I was a Girl Guide and in grade 6 (the summer I was 12), I went to a provincial GG camp and it was a Big Deal for kids from Cape Breton. I was driven about 3 hours off the island and got to camp with girls from all over Nova Scotia. I made friends at that camp that I still have today. One of them just got married last weekend. That is frightening because it means I am officially growing up. (NO! You can’t make me!) (more…)

An Isa Moskowitz and Terry Romero recipe has never failed me….UNTIL NOW! (Bah bah buuuummmm!)

I was attempting to make their Brooklyn vs. Boston Cream Pie Cakes from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World. In this recipe you fill vanilla cupcakes with a vegan pastry creme filling. I followed the recipe to the letter for the pastry creme, but it was just not feelin’ me. It would not thicken to the proper consistency.

I was over at my dear friend Jerri’s house, and I was getting beyond frustrated. It was the end of a long day, I had just finished cooking and shooting some other recipes, and I was nearing my rope’s end. After the third failed attempt I literally threw my hands up and declared, “THAT’S IT! I’m finished!” (more…)

Do You Want S’more?!?

8 Nov

S'Love

In my city (HALIWOOD!…but seriously, it’s Halifax, NS) you cannot buy vegan graham crackers. I baked some for my Guy Fawkes s’more party on Friday and had leftovers. That means one thing: S’more Cupcakes!

This recipe is, of course, from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World (I told you I bake from it a lot). The recipe was not outrageous to follow, you just need to have access to the VGC. (Vegan graham crackers?! Try to keep up, please.) The fun with this recipe comes from the mess you make decorating them. Check it, yo. (more…)
