The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree

29 Oct

There is an inexhaustible list of reasons why autumn in Nova Scotia kicks ass, but one of the tastiest is also one nearest to the top: It’s apple pickin’ time! Our big apple growing region is the Annapolis Valley (or just “the Valley”, if you’re from ’round these parts), and we enjoy the fruits of the Valley’s farmers’ labours each and every fall with great vigour. And one of our favourite ways to do so? Apple crisp, bitches. (more…)

BOOM

I hope you’re ready for another massive dose of insanity, because it’s time for the next post in the “From the Booth” series! In this series, as previously shown, you and I will take advantage of the endless hours spent at my weekend/evening job in a parking lot attendant booth by cooking vegan food right here at the lot.

This week we delve into a world as of yet unexplored at the booth: Baking! Baking? BAKING?!?! In a parking lot?!? All right, everybody needs to calm down. Yes. We’re going to bake. Let’s make the impossible possible! Grab your mixing bowls! We’re making banana bread. (If you’re thinking, “This shit is bananas!”, you’re not wrong.) (more…)

CHURROS!!!!!!

I was sitting around one evening last week doing a whole lot of nothing when I was struck by a sudden and unyielding urge to eat a churro. What are churros and when have I been exposed to them in the past? I know you’re dying to know these things. Let’s back this story train up to the last station, shall we? (more…)

Easy As Pie

Sugar pie, honey bunch! You know that I loooove youuuu!!! Well, sugar and honey are two things Jerri and I don’t do. So the main question at hand is what to do when you are vegan and your bestie is diabetic? Bake diabetic-friendly vegan pies, of course! (Duh.) Can we please start by agreeing that whoever created the term “easy as pie” can kiss my ass right now? Thank you. Moving on… (more…)

Childhood

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!!!! It’s Christmastime! This means two things: cookies and…..wait for it……do you know what I’m ’bout to say?…..Mariah Carey! Please get your festive pants on and dance around the kitchen with me to this EXTENDED VERSION of Mizz Diva’s holiday classic! You’d better believe that I am partaking in a bit of Mariah Carey-oke right now. I sincerely hope you are too.

Tonight is the night that I share with you a veganised version of my favourite, favourite, favourite Christmas cookies! You’re so excited, I can tell! This was my first time baking these since becoming vegan. They turned out quite well and were delicious, but not quite where I wanted the texture to be. I’ll tell you what: it’s Christmas and everyone needs to eat these cookies at Christmas. I’ll share the recipe now, spend the next year perfecting them so we achieve the correct amount of SNAP! and I’ll update you next year. Sound like a plan? Fantastic. Let’s roll. (more…)

Baked Bunz

I am seriously slipping into a sugar coma right now. I joke about it all the time, but this is for realsies. My ears are tuning things out and everything’s going right quiet, my arms are dead weight, and I am finding it hard to keep my eyes open. Everything’s moooovviiinngggg slllooowwllyyy. But seriously, I would like to enjoy this and just collapse into bed and let it take over, but ALAS! I have to write this post to you, so I must FIGHT IT! And fight it I will.

Tonight I made Sunday Cinnamon Rolls (appropriate!) from The Vegan Scoop by Wheeler del Torro. I know what you’re thinking! No, not “Golly, get to the pictures already!” You’re thinking, “Cinnamon Rolls? From a vegan ice cream book?!?!??” Fret not, dear friends, he has a section at the back called, “Ice Cream Sides & Desserts”, under which this recipe falls. And from what I just tasted, I can confidently say that it’s worth it to purchase the book for this recipe alone. Sweet Mother of Pearl, these buns… (more…)
