A Long Overdue #VeganTweetup Review

12 Oct

Melty

I still have a couple folders of unblogged-about pictures from events/cooking sessions in Halifax. I stashed them and saved them up so that if there came a day in London when I had nothing to blog about, I would have some backup subjects. Well, friends, it turns out that London never leaves me short of vegan things to go on about, so I have these folders of Halifax-related things that are swiftly becoming outdated. The long-overdue day has come for me to talk about the second #VeganTweetup Halifax Twitter vegans (and friends) vegan potluck in Halifax. (more…)

What is the Weather Like in Mexico?

Salsa & the Nurse

…Chili today and hot tamale. AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA. I’ll give you a moment to compose yourselves… Ready? On we go to another Tex-Mex post.

Before we start, I’d like to welcome you to another Vegan Month of Food! I am moving from Canada to the UK in two days. If you thought I was frazzled last year while doing MoFo and working two jobs and travelling to NYC, just wait until I do it during an international move! You’re in for a possible roller coaster ride, friends! Hop aboard!

Anyways, let’s do this!

I am a firm believer in learning new words as often as possible and using them whenever and wherever you can. I especially like discovering words that have long gone out of fashion. Grab them from the forgotten corners of linguistic history, brush them off, and begin to use them again! Today’s word, dear readers, is “slapdash”. (more…)

No Enchiladas in the Icebox

No Peps Yet

This is what I consider to be a lazy post. I don’t count this as cooking. It took maybe half an hour and there wasn’t a sink-full of dishes at the end of this. Why don’t I “cook” like this more often?

The other night was Mexican Night at la Casa del Butcher! It had been a looooong time since quesadillas were part of our lives, so we whipped out my handy quesadilla maker and fired it up. Oh yes, I own a quesadilla maker. I have a love for any and all kitchen gadgets and appliances and have been known to make some ridiculous purchases over the years. This was absolutely one of them but unlike some others I do not regret this one at all. It’s a fackin’ quesadilla maker! Once you try one out, Mexican night will never be the same again. (more…)

Get Cho Mac On!

Delizious

I am about to impart to you the sacred knowledge that is the recipe for my Mama’s macaroni and cheese. Well, that is to say this would be my Mama’s macaroni and cheese if my Mama were vegan. Last week she and I hit the kitchen and veganised a family favourite. (more…)

Dammit, Dolly!

2 Aug

Hamburg, DE

Dolly Parton very nearly ruined my dinner last week. This post chronicles that evening.

Let me begin by stating my undying, unconditional, lifelong love for Dolly Parton. She is a musical genius and has a brilliant mind for business. And she’s funny as hell. What it comes down to is that she has never done nor will she ever do anything I don’t absolutely love. I think during the next holiday season I’m going to have to devote a post to how much I love her and Kenny Rogers’s Once Upon a Christmas album. But that is not this post. This post is about Dolly Parton and vegan hamburgers. (more…)

Lackadaisical Long Weekend Pizza

7 Jun

Ooey Gooey

Ever have one of those days when you don’t want to put any effort into your meal because, a) It’s the May long weekend and you’ve just worked the whole thing, and b) You’re drunk? Yeah, me too. This May 2-4 weekend I was hammered and wanted pizza.

Disclaimer: This post contains the least amount of effort of any I’ve posted thus far. (more…)

T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chili…with Cornbread

Hot Damn

I did some research on the history of chili for this post and I need to start by saying that the chili purist community is fairly snobby about what they consider to be “real” chili. Well, they are not going to like this recipe in the slightest, I’ll tell you that much for free. I don’t care though, because this is chili as I know it and it’s delicious. So they should just chill…..i out. (more…)

From the Booth: Deluxe Grilled Cheese Sandwich

20 Mar

Cheesy Bastard

As I have previously bitched blogged about, in preparation for my move to London in 6 months, I am working two jobs. By day I sell group health & life insurance. By night (and weekend) I work in a tollbooth at a hospital parking lot. As far as second jobs go, it’s pretty sweet. For example, I am writing this blog post in my booth right now. I have tonnes of downtime, it’s not strenuous or stressful in the slightest, and I just cooked a grill cheese sandwich while on the clock. If I have to spend an extra 33 hours of my week working, this is a pretty good place to do it. (more…)

Mind Blowing

…To prove it wasn’t chicken! AHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAAH. Okay, onwards and forwards.

Life as I know it has changed. I have seen the light and I am now back in the darkness. This is my final post about my vacation in NYC (sorry for the ridiculous delay, but there was the small matter of a huge hangover whilst travelling home and then getting called into my weekend job yesterday, so let’s all just deal with it). I had the most amazing culinary experiences of my life this past week, vegan or non. It’s the simple things in life that bring me the biggest joy, like actually having multiple vegan choices on a menu, or not having to explain the concept of veganism to a restaurant. I was spoiled in NYC, and you are about to hear about the last and one of the my favourite restaurants I visited this entire week.

On Friday night Alex and I ventured into Williamsburg (her neighbourhood in Brooklyn) and hit up Foodswings, an all-vegan fast food joint. Yes, you read that correctly: AN ALL-VEGAN FAST FOOD JOINT! Frig right off. (more…)
