From the Booth: Hot Chocolate

4 Oct

Mug

As I type this I am on an airplane somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. I would much rather be sleeping like my delicious-smelling seatmate (oh, European men!), but I have committed to blog daily during the month of October for Vegan MoFo, and blog I shall! It’s all for you, my dear readers. I hope you all know how much I love you. Really, I do. I love you all dearly. SERIOUSLY. (Getting a restraining order will be much more difficult for you now, eh? Which country do you take it out in? I’m on the lam!) Anyhow, my snuggly monster friend and I (Monster Mo, if you’re wondering) shall each keep an eye open long enough to draft this blog post for you. (more…)

From the Booth: Box Oven Banana Bread

29 Aug

BOOM

I hope you’re ready for another massive dose of insanity, because it’s time for the next post in the “From the Booth” series! In this series, as previously shown, you and I will take advantage of the endless hours spent at my weekend/evening job in a parking lot attendant booth by cooking vegan food right here at the lot.

This week we delve into a world as of yet unexplored at the booth: Baking! Baking? BAKING?!?! In a parking lot?!? All right, everybody needs to calm down. Yes. We’re going to bake. Let’s make the impossible possible! Grab your mixing bowls! We’re making banana bread. (If you’re thinking, “This shit is bananas!”, you’re not wrong.) (more…)

On Fire For You

The “From the Booth” series is BACK! With less than two months remaining until I pack up and ship off to England, the extra hours at my weekend/evening job have been ramping up and I figure we should utilise them by cooking ridiculous things in the parking lot.

The first time we threw caution and common sense to the wind and cooked at the attendant booth of my parking lot we made a vegan grilled cheese sandwich. This time we are harnessing more of my mad Girl Guide cooking skills and we’re making a Milk Carton Hot Dog. Get ready for this shit. (more…)

From the Booth: Deluxe Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Cheesy Bastard

As I have previously bitched blogged about, in preparation for my move to London in 6 months, I am working two jobs. By day I sell group health & life insurance. By night (and weekend) I work in a tollbooth at a hospital parking lot. As far as second jobs go, it’s pretty sweet. For example, I am writing this blog post in my booth right now. I have tonnes of downtime, it’s not strenuous or stressful in the slightest, and I just cooked a grill cheese sandwich while on the clock. If I have to spend an extra 33 hours of my week working, this is a pretty good place to do it. (more…)

Easy As Pie

Sugar pie, honey bunch! You know that I loooove youuuu!!! Well, sugar and honey are two things Jerri and I don’t do. So the main question at hand is what to do when you are vegan and your bestie is diabetic? Bake diabetic-friendly vegan pies, of course! (Duh.) Can we please start by agreeing that whoever created the term “easy as pie” can kiss my ass right now? Thank you. Moving on… (more…)

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

In a Pickle

I’ve figured out what it takes to get me to post: I need an assignment! I need pressure. Participating in VeganMoFo forced me to post every day, and so I did. Well, dear readers, I have a new assignment and I’ve decided to take you along for the ride! I have been asked by a certain darling Alicia C. Simpson to be a recipe tester for her as yet untitled third vegan cookbook. Eeeeeee! I was very delighted and honoured when she asked me to help out. This is my documentation of the testing process. Yellow Rose of Texas

…guess I’ll go eat worms! This post is purely for the kids, or anyone else you enjoy tricking and feeding sugar to.

When I was a Girl Guide and in grade 6 (the summer I was 12), I went to a provincial GG camp and it was a Big Deal for kids from Cape Breton. I was driven about 3 hours off the island and got to camp with girls from all over Nova Scotia. I made friends at that camp that I still have today. One of them just got married last weekend. That is frightening because it means I am officially growing up. (NO! You can’t make me!) (more…)

Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

5 Nov

S'marvelous

It’s Guy Fawkes Night! Commonly known as Bonfire Night, the 5th of November is an annual celebration marking the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. As a holder of dual citizenship with Britain, I am allowed to observe this tradition in Canada by making s’mores. God Save the Queen!

Totally Mint

ChocoMint

Let me start this post by saying that I come from a small town where the word “mint” is (was? Are you kids still doing it nowadays?) used as a descriptive term for an attractive person. Equivalent to hot or fit or goooood-lookin’. (i.e. “Guuuurl, have you seen Steve today? So mint!” or “I am going to pick him up this weekend, he is MINT.” You get the idea.) Now onwards and forwards…

I am a lifelong member of the Girl Guides of Canada. I started as a Spark at the age of 5, worked my way up through the ranks, and finally ended as a leader. I’m taking this year off, as leading a unit whilst working two jobs is a level of insanity that I am not willing to ascend to. A big part of my childhood was spent selling Girl Guide cookies. During our fall campaign we peddled chocolate mint cookies, and people went (and still go) absolutely ape shit for them. GG cookies aren’t vegan (how wonderful would it be if they were?!), so now I need to find another way to get my chocolaty-mint fix.
