I Put A Spell On You

31 Oct

Good God, I Wanna Kiss Myself

It’s Hallowe’en, I have just carved my pumpkin, and my original, childhood VHS copy of “Hocus Pocus” is playing in the VCR. What could possibly make this day more wonderful? If you’re thinking “baking with squash from the fall harvest”, you and I would be on the same page. (more…)

Have My Cake And Eat It Too

Boxing Champ

It finally happened, my friends. I finally got to Ms. Cupcake’s brick and mortar store in Brixton, London. AHHH! Jimmy, Kaleigh and I hopped the Victoria tube line south of the Thames, followed the signs, and found our way. (more…)

Mug

As I type this I am on an airplane somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. I would much rather be sleeping like my delicious-smelling seatmate (oh, European men!), but I have committed to blog daily during the month of October for Vegan MoFo, and blog I shall! It’s all for you, my dear readers. I hope you all know how much I love you. Really, I do. I love you all dearly. SERIOUSLY. (Getting a restraining order will be much more difficult for you now, eh? Which country do you take it out in? I’m on the lam!) Anyhow, my snuggly monster friend and I (Monster Mo, if you’re wondering) shall each keep an eye open long enough to draft this blog post for you. (more…)

Dinosaur Burgers

Burg

I went over to my darling bestie Jerri’s house the other day. The days are getting shorter, the nights chillier, and the summer is clearly dying. Before it gives its final death rattle we wanted to have one last BBQ hurrah. Jerr Bear had a supply of mini hamburgers and mini buns and was going to make mini sliders.

NEEDLESS TO SAY (but you know I’m gonna say it anyway), I got very jealous. I wanted to have mini burgers too! As I sat there grumping Jerri and I came up with a plan: mushroom sliders! If we couldn’t find vegan mini buns we would make our own with cookie cutters and bread! IT WAS ON! (more…)

Into the Woods: Little Red’s Sticky Buns

Stuck

It’s time for our next post in the “Into the Woods” series! If you missed the first I recommend that you read back so as not to be totally and utterly confused during this post.

Next up on our list of fairy tale characters to explore: Little Red Riding Hood.

In “Into the Woods” Little Red is a chubby little thing that loves her sweets. She stops by the Baker’s house on her way into the woods to visit her grandmother and places an order…all for Granny, of course:

“It’s not for me, it’s for my Granny in the woods. A loaf of bread, please—to bring my poor old hungry Granny in the woods… Just a loaf of bread, please… And perhaps a sticky bun? Or four? And a few of those pies, please… I sort of hate to ask it, but do you have a basket?” (more…)

Churros & Seagulls

CHURROS!!!!!!

I was sitting around one evening last week doing a whole lot of nothing when I was struck by a sudden and unyielding urge to eat a churro. What are churros and when have I been exposed to them in the past? I know you’re dying to know these things. Let’s back this story train up to the last station, shall we? (more…)

All I Can Think of is Strawberry Wine…and Seventeen

Dish It Up

I was trying to think of a strawberry-themed name for this post that had nothing to do with Strawberry Shortcake or Strawberry Fields Forever and now all I have stuck in my head is THIS effing song. Seriously. Time to get it out. (more…)

Fresh Food But Not Food From Fresh

Hell Yes

My last post was about the meals we ate at the restaurant Fresh while I was on vacation in Toronto. This post is about all the other meals from that vacation, both in Toronto and back in my brother’s city of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. (more…)

Christmas in February

Lattice Work

A couple of days before Christmas I baked vegan mince pies and then got too busy to blog about it. I just found this draft that was started on 23 DEC and figured I’d finish it now. Merry Christmas!

I am British. Check my passport if you don’t believe me! My Papa was born in London and I have British citizenship by descent. I have dual citizenship: UK and Canada. Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway, I figured since I was all British and junk that I should start learning how to be so. Pip pip! (more…)

Childhood

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!!!! It’s Christmastime! This means two things: cookies and…..wait for it……do you know what I’m ’bout to say?…..Mariah Carey! Please get your festive pants on and dance around the kitchen with me to this EXTENDED VERSION of Mizz Diva’s holiday classic! You’d better believe that I am partaking in a bit of Mariah Carey-oke right now. I sincerely hope you are too.

Tonight is the night that I share with you a veganised version of my favourite, favourite, favourite Christmas cookies! You’re so excited, I can tell! This was my first time baking these since becoming vegan. They turned out quite well and were delicious, but not quite where I wanted the texture to be. I’ll tell you what: it’s Christmas and everyone needs to eat these cookies at Christmas. I’ll share the recipe now, spend the next year perfecting them so we achieve the correct amount of SNAP! and I’ll update you next year. Sound like a plan? Fantastic. Let’s roll. (more…)
